The Infectious Disease Department of the Greater New Bedford Community Health Center offers HIV Counseling, Testing and Referral to both Health Center patients and members of the community seeking confidential HIV testing. We offer rapid testing technology (results in 30 minutes) and a traditional serum test that takes two weeks for results.

The Infectious Disease Department staff encourages screening for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) as well as a Hepatitis screening. Immunizations are available for those at risk for Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B.
Appointments and walk-ins are welcome.
New HIV Patients
Patients newly diagnosed with HIV or patients who are transferring their care need to schedule their initial appointment with a nurse (medical manager). The initial visit is comprehensive. The nurse performs a complete assessment, gathers the medical history, reviews current medications, and orders necessary lab work. The nurse also assesses the need for social services, substance abuse referrals, housing, and case management. The patients primary care is established with a physician or a nurse practitioner. Future appointments include a nutrition visit, dental exam, ophthalmology, and any other specialty referral that is needed. Patients without medical insurance are assisted in completing necessary insurance applications and continue to receive medical care while awaiting approval.
